• Ottio was due to travel to UK this week after signing from Canberra
• Widnes confirm player developed ‘sudden health issue’ in training
Widnes have announced that their new signing, Kato Ottio, has died at the age of 23. Ottio was due to travel to the UK this week to begin his career with the Vikings, having recently agreed to join from the Canberra NRL club before the new Super League season, which begins next month.
However, Ottio died on Monday after what the club described as a “sudden health issue” in a brief statement confirming the player’s death. He had impressed as part of Papua New Guinea’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals last autumn, prompting Widnes to sign him.
