The foreign secretary will call on remain and leave voters to unite, insisting that Britain can take advantage of the referendum vote for economic gain but only if it is ready to diverge on regulations.

EU chief negotiator and UK Brexit secretary at odds over transition period demands

The UK’s Brexit secretary, David Davis, has engaged in a war of words with the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, over the latter’s claims that unacceptable British demands had thrown into doubt an agreement on a transition period.

Speaking in Brussels after the latest round of talks, Barnier told reporters he had been left mystified by the positions taken by Downing Street in recent days. “To be quite frank, if these disagreements persist, the transition is not a given,” Barnier said.

The UK’s record of presenting its demands “at five past midnight” during the Brexit negotiations is developing into a major problem, senior EU diplomats have said, with frustrations now emerging over London’s lethargy over the transition period.

A current cause of concern is Downing Street’s failure as yet to formally seek the EU’s help in keeping the country in the bloc’s 65 free trade agreements with non-EU nations across the world, despite fears in Brussels that the process will be fraught with difficulties.

Tory backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg challenges Brexit secretary over plans for ECJ jurisdiction

David Davis has clashed publicly with Jacob Rees-Mogg over plans for Britain to accept European court of justice jurisdiction during a Brexit transition.

The Conservative backbencher, who was recently appointed to chair the well-coordinated European Research Group of pro-Brexit Tory MPs, suggested to the Brexit secretary that Britain would be a “vassal state” during the transition period.
