Malcolm Turnbull responds to ‘shocking error of judgment’ by deputy PM, who had a relationship with a former staffer who is now pregnant

Australia’s prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, will move to ban sexual relationships between ministers and their staff, in response to a scandal which has engulfed the deputy prime minister and leader of the National party, Barnaby Joyce.

Turnbull announced the ban at the end of a parliamentary week dominated by controversy over Joyce’s relationship with a former staffer, Vikki Campion, which began when Sydney’s Daily Telegraph published a front-page photograph effectively confirming the end of Joyce’s 24-year marriage, and Campion’s pregnancy.

Natalie Joyce has said she feels “deceived and hurt” by her husband, Australian deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce, for starting an affair with a person who was his employee at the time.

After the Daily Telegraph’s publication of a picture of the visibly pregnant Vikki Campion, Natalie Joyce said in a statement that she was “deeply saddened by the news that my husband has been having an affair and is now having a child with a former staff member”.

A Hobart DJ has admitted to head-butting the former prime minister Tony Abbott at the city’s waterfront.

Astro Labe, 38, pleaded guilty on Thursday in Hobart magistrates court to the charge of causing harm to a commonwealth official. The court heard Labe followed Abbott for about 250m and offered to shake his hand before “launching” into a head-butt on 21 September.
