Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan has announced that he is suffering from what he describes as a “rare disease”.

The veteran star wrote on Twitter that he didn’t want fans to speculate about his condition until he had a “conclusive diagnosis”. He said that he would reveal more about the illness within a week to 10 days.

Thousands of mourning fans have lined the streets of Mumbai to pay their respects to Sridevi Kapoor, the celebrated Bollywood actor who drowned in a hotel bathtub in Dubai over the weekend.

Her body was flown home on Tuesday night in a private plane owned by Anil Ambani, a Mumbai industrialist and entertainment baron.

Sridevi Kapoor was a Bollywood legend, and one of the rare female stars with enough celebrity megawattage to match the lions of the Indian film industry, and enough above-the-title prestige to carry a film on her own. She was known simply as “Sridevi” – but this was not a kind of Madonna single-name branding. She was so ubiquitous that people thought of her as a friend.

Sridevi’s face was her fortune: delicately beautiful, but with a pertly cherubic, doe-eyed guilelessness that enabled her to play romance, musicals, drama, comedy and indeed action. Fantasy and fun were the solvents for her sexiness. In the 1986 film Nagina, or Female Snake, she had an uproarious snake dance. Audiences loved it when she did an outrageously broad Charlie Chaplin impression, while playing the goofy journalist in the 1987 film Mr India. She also broke out wacky Jackie-Chan-style fight moves, such as those in the 1989 comedy Chaalbaaz, or Trickster, where she played twins, separated at birth.

Sridevi Kapoor, a Bollywood superstar who broke the mould when it came to playing traditionally coy female roles, has died after suffering a heart attack in Dubai, her family said on Sunday.

Tributes soon flowed from figures ranging from the prime minister to fellow cinematic figures and fans following the death of the star at 54, reportedly while attending her nephew’s wedding late on Saturday night.
